Either the Chassis or Cabinet can be used for the Media gateway on a CS1000E system. The Chassis is a 5 slot

main unit with an optional 4 slot Expander cabinet. The two are connected using 2 copper cables. The expander

is a part of the main media gateway and only adds the 4 card slots , no other functionality.

Each Chassis or Cabinet uses a Media Gateway Controller card to control the cards in the gateway and to

communicate across the ELAN to the Call server.
